Zingiber officinale (Dry Ginger) Sonth:
Ginger helps improve the functioning of digestive process by rejuvenating digestive fire (Agni). Ginger promotes gastric secretion and is excellent for many kinds of digestive complaints including gas, colic pain and indigestion. It is highly effective in combating nausea due to indigestion, pregnancy and travel. The volatile oil in ginger relaxes the stomach and stimulates peristalsis thereby supporting digestion. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of saponins, flavonoids, and alkaloids in ginger extract. The cholinergic and spasmogenic component of ginger extract causes prokinetic action on stomach. In addition, the presence of spasmolytic constituents explains its use in hyperactive states of intestine like colic and diarrhea. Ginger also acts as a carminative and helps to eliminate flatulence. Along with piper longum and piper nigrum, it enhances the absorption of other herbs and nutrients from gastrointestinal tract.
Trachyspermum ammi (Ajowan) Ajowain:
Ajowan is useful in colic pain and anorexia. Ajowan is found to increase digestive secretion by a cholinergic mechanism that makes it useful in Low Stomach Acid (Weak Agni) conditions. According to Ayurveda, Ajowain is a powerful cleanser of the body. It is also known for its antispasmodic and stimulant properties. It helps to expel gas from intestines and relieves abdominal pain and distension.
Foeniculum vulgare (Fennel sweet) Saunf:
Fennel has been used for centuries to soothe digestion and to reduce gas and bloating. It is antispasmodic, helps in proper gastrointestinal activity, calms mild spasms in the gastrointestinal tract and reduces bloating. Saunf was found to have a protective effect against gastro-intestinal mucosal injury due to irritants. Its protective effect is produced by the reduction of lipid peroxidation and increase in the antioxidant activity. The British Herbal Pharmacopoeia states that Fennel is specifically indicated for flatulence in infants.
Terminalia chebula (Chebulic Myrobalan) Haritaki:
Haritaki is one of the three herbs of Triphala, a famous Ayurveda formulation for detoxification. Its traditional use as a laxative is well established. Haritaki has shown to increase gastric emptying time and a protective effect on the gastrointestinal mucosa. It also increases the secretions of Brunner's glands that is involved in the protection against duodenal ulcer. It is helpful in problems like bloating, dyspepsia and excessive belching.
Carica papaya (Papaya) Papita:
Papaya fruit is high in papain, a potent proteolytic enzyme that supports the breakdown of proteins. In one clinical study Papain has produced therapeutic effect in persons with inflammatory disorders of the intestine and liver. Another study showed activity of papaya against helminthes. Benzyl isothiocyanate is considered to be the anthelmintic in papaya seed extracts. Bacteriostatic activity of papaya is documented against several enteropathogens such as Bacillus subtilis, Enterobacter cloacae, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus vulgaris, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Benzyl isothiocyanate from the pulp and seeds of papaya is a potent inducer of glutathione S-transferase, a phase II enzyme involved in the cellular detoxification of xenobiotics and reactive metabolites. Papaya supports optimal bowel function and has shown soothing effects on the stomach and digestive tract. It is used in children for stomach cramps.
Mytilus margaritiferus (Pearl Oyster Shell) Muktashukti Bhasma:
It is the calcinated shell of pearl oyster and has calcium, magnesium and iron. It is well known for its antacid and digestive properties. Muktashukti is especially triturated with lemon juice that makes it useful to regulate stomach acid secretion. It is helpful in sprue, colic and hepato-splenomegaly. It improves the functioning of digestive fire, Pachaka pitta and Kledaka kapha which regulate the process of digestion. It also helps balance the pH of the gastrointestinal tract.
Sodii chloridum impura (Rock salt) Saindhav Lavan:
According to Ayurveda rock salt is superior among other salts. It is carminative, stomachic and digestive. It promotes the appetite, improves salivation and assists in digestion and assimilation. It helps to balance stomach acids.
Cuminum cyminum (Cumin) Jeera:
Cumin is a source of thymol which is used as an anti-helminth against hookworm infestation and also as an antiseptic in many Ayurvedic formulations. It is a stimulant that increases the secretion of digestive juices, relieves flatulence and strengthens the functions of stomach. Cumin helps in colic, dyspepsia, flatulence, bloating and indigestion.
Piper nigrum (Black Pepper) Marich:
Black pepper has highest stimulating and carminative properties that causes a reflex flow of saliva and increases secretion of gastric juice. It improves gastro-intestinal movement and promotes expulsion of gas and relieves colic.
Piper longum (Long Pepper) Pippali:
Piper longum is a powerful digestive stimulant. It is one of the widely used ayurvedic herbs for enhancing digestion, assimilation and metabolism. It is highly prized for its ability to enhance the assimilation of other herbs. In a study, Pippali showed antiulcerogenic potential and provides protection against gastric ulcer.
Citrus limon (Lemon) Nimbu Satva:
In Ayurveda, lemon extract is used for digestive troubles. Its pleasant sour taste stimulates taste bud and improves appetite. It increases the enzymatic secretion responsible for proper digestion. It balances pH of the stomach and regulates acid secretion. The essential oil from the skin of the fruit has stimulating and carminative properties.
Ferula narthex (Asafoetida) Hing:
This strong, hot and penetrating spice stimulates the digestive system. It possesses antimicrobial activity. The volatile oil present in asafoetida has antibiotic properties thus inhibits growth of microbes in gastrointestinal tract. It is a useful remedy for indigestion, flatulence, spasms and colic.
